New Year Resolutions

I dont really have a habbit of making new year resolutions normally..

But i think for the upcoming year in 2007, I would like to:

  1. Have a more tidy room (my room is in a messy state with all the FYP stuff lying around)
  2. Study hard and get better results, especially since exams start end of January!!!!! yikes!
  3. Establish myself more in the food industry.

Hope these 3 points can be achieved in the upcoming year.

Anyway, here's wishing all you guys a Happy New Year.. May all your wishes come true in 2007!

Featured

Been receiving loads of phone calls and smses.. telling me that i have been featured on Singapore Polytechnics feature on the New Paper today..

yea yea...

it's me.. but nothing much to be proud of... cos must work harder... cant stop!

Anyway, went back to school today to set up our Spinnovex booth.. was told that we have to wear white top for the whole event... so i had to go all the way to town to get a white top.. went to CK, Zara, Raoul... searching for my white long sleeved shirt.. eventually settling on the Zara shirt..

Feline Spoof!!!

Was talking a walk in the supermarket today..

noticed something interesting on this particular brand of tissue paper...

Leave it to your imagination... ingenious idea? or just another low down spoof?

The lack of reciprocation during X'mas!

Every christmas, I always make it a point to write cards and get meaningful gifts for my close friends... But this christmas, seems to be pretty sad for me... cos I only got back one card from my secondary school teacher... despite the fact that i sent out a whole stack of cards..

To make things worse, I only got back one present.. and it was from a christmas exchange!!! gosh... am i unpopular or what?

Christmas... might be the spirit of giving.. but is it meant to be a one way kinda thing?

All I want for X'mas

What I really really want for Christmas this year:

  1. A bottle of Clinique Happy for Men, really love the fruity fresh smell
  2. A G star bag
  3. More clothes especially for my upcoming functions!
  4. More truthful, caring friends!
  5. Last but not least, not being a bimbo like in those beauty pageant contests, but I wish for world peace and joy... so that we all can be happy and hopefully the economy will get better!

6E Xmas Gathering 2006!

It's Winter Solstice today... and also my primary school class reunion today!!!!

Haha.. 2nd year in a row that we are having it on winter solstice... which is pretty apt.. since it calls for a reunion with tang yuan!

this year we had a total of 11 of us meeting at our form teacher, Miss Sim's place.. which was nearly affected by the bad flood due to the rain a couple of days back!

We had a great dinner there.. The food was superb!!!!Curry Chicken, Roast Duck, Fish balls, Ngoh Hiang, Handmade Ondeh Ondeh and Tang Yuan...

The most interesting part was to play the game which sort of bonded us together again.. just like the good old days.. of course, Sudoku was like.. oh my god... number and more numbers on a Friday night!!! argghhhh!!!!!

Shopping Shopping!!!

Went down to Orchard Road today to do some X'mas shopping!!!

The crowd is humungous!!!!!

Throngs of people waiting to pay for their items, others queuing to get their items wrapped!! Went to Takashimaya and the place was even more crowded!! Guess everyone was waiting to do some last minute shopping eh!!!

Bought some stuff for the X'mas exchange tommorrow and got some magazines for myself at Borders.. The queue though not snake long was so slow moving that I wonder what the cashiers were doing!

Tried the Tofu Cheesecake at Moon @ Sun at Wheelock Place! It came under this bird cage like adornment and was so light that it melted in the mouth!!

It better not rain....

I was keeping my fingers crossed for the whole day today..

thank god that it did not rain at East Coast Park..

Bought log cakes, fish balls, fried wanton, satay and otah all the way to East Coast via Taxi.. thankfully the pit was near the car park.. did not have to walk that far!!!

The BBQ was good.. Mrs Ku was there to help out too.. Mr Lim also brought his special aloe vera drink and chilled watermelon!!!

Will try to upload some pics here soon!!!

During the BBQ... saw the group of people next to our pit trying to burn a tree with some lighter fuel fluid... Its so inconsiderate and ugly of this kids.. Really felt like calling the police to the scene!

Gosh.. Its been raining for the past couple of days..

I feel so trapped in doors..

Seen the news that certain parts of Singapore have been flooding very badly..

hope things turn brigher and drier tommorrow.. cos we have class BBQ at ECP!

Enchanted by Magic

Yes, 16th Dec.. My birthday!

Was invited to watch this magic show by my best friend who passed me the tickets about a month ago! talk about advance booking..

Before going to the magic show at Expo, I was a Thai Express at Siglap using my birthday voucher!!!

Took a taxi to Expo for the show: The Magic of Love, an excellent musical cum magical show! The storyline revolves around this magician duo, father named Lawrence and daughter Priscilla. Both were brillant, but Priscilla yearned for her own magic show for fame and fortune, and decided to leave with her partner, Charlie, against her father wishes.

And as fate had it, she fell into a sinister plot which her father's enemy had planned. You might wanna check out more info about this group at http://www.magicoflove.com.sg/

Really enjoyed the whole show, in terms of lighting effects, story line, magicals stunts. The moral of the story of the musical was also touching! Thank for inviting me to the show!

Also, a big thank you to my school mate Kaixin for remembering my birthday and texting me!

The day before my birthday... let the celebrations begin!

Headed to school for 9 today!

Presented chocolates to the class.. not everyone knew why i bought chocolates for.. some thought it was some form of early X'mas celebrations. Tsk Tsk... anyway.. ironically, I recieved a box of chocolate candles from my class mate, Xinyi, appreciate it a lot! Thanks for remembering!

The last lesson was cancelled today.. so i went down to Raffles City to indulge in some yultide cheer, buying for myself some clothes and stuff again.. Met a friend for lunch at Plaza Singapura Burger King, its so packed during lunch time, can hardly find a place to eat!

After lunch, met my friend Matthew for more Christmas shopping!

In the evening, had a wonderful sumptous buffet dinner with my family to celebrate my birthday. This is the first time that I am put off by buffet dinner, even though there was a great variety of foods!!! Why???

This is due to unhygienic practices of locals!!!!

Firstly, I saw this guy pinch food using his bare hands at the buffet counter.

Secondly, People were chatting so merrily, (which seems so perfectily alright) but they were doing so at the buffet table!!!! I dont want my food innoculated with showers of blessing!!! yikes!

Lastly, I saw this guy at the buffet table who turned back and covered his mouth with his hands when he sneezed. For a moment, I thought, at least he had the courtesy to turn back and cover his mouth... But not when he continued to hold the tongs to get more food without cleaning his hands.... eeeee....

That's it.. I am going to be turned off by buffets for quite a while!

The horrors of Fatty Acids

I did the anaylsis of fatty acids in food today using the Buchi method.. look at all the intricate glass apparatus set up....

gosh!!!

It smells so bad after washing the equipment.. smells like all the fats have gone rancid for a long time.. and it stinks like hell...

to make things worse, fish meal was anaylzed.. so we had the fishy and rancid smell combined... I was the one in charge of opening and pouring the waste into waste bottles today... and some of the gross stuff spilt on my hand... and it stinked so much that despite washing my hands several times with soap.. the smell was still lingering.. yucks...

On a brighter note.. got a 2nd birthday gift today from Mother Nature.. a blushing blooming Tillandsia ionantha... damn red...

Hustle and Bustle

Wednesdays never fail to make me feel so stressed..

Today, I ended up rushing from place to place.. from Bugis to Cityhall then to chinatown..

was supposed to go back to school for a phototaking session for graduation party... but i was late.. so i skipped.. not really feeling that bad about it..

perhaps its due to the fact of the lack of cohesiveness amongst classmates?

My 1st present!

My 1st birthday present this year is none other from myself!!!

finally got it today after some alteration.. cant help but feel i got good taste.. duh! :p

Why???

This song really reflects my feelings now..

Why - DJ Sammy
How many times do I have to try and tell you
That I'm sorry for the things I've done
But when I start to try to tell you
That's when you have to tell me
Hey This kind of trouble's only just begun

I may be mad I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you're thinking
Let's go down to the water's edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out Turning inside out Tell me
Why...
Why...
Tell me

Why... Why...

ROM

nono...
its not Read Only Memory..

Rather it stands for Registry of Marriages.. The place where most people hope to go only once and for all!

haha..

Anyway, witnessed my cousins engagement ceremony today! Time really flies... Remember the carefree childhood days... and in the twinkling of an eye.. I got cousins getting married... getting engaged.. having kids.. and pesky relatives asking me the same old question about when my turn will be.. It's an utter night mare!!

Sentosa Before the IR begins!

Went to Sentosa today for dinner with nearly the entire family of relatives I have from Malaysia!

They were out to witness the engagement of my cousin tommorrow.

Its been a long time since i stepped foot onto sentosa.. If i'm not wrong, the last time i was there should be after my A levels chalet. Of course, there have been plenty of changes.. but some of the things still remain the same.. like the musical fountains and stuff..

View of shoreline from Sentosa

What's lurking under the sea?

The smell of X'mas is in the air!

Yes.. right after the Food Legislation Test i had today, headed straight to town..

First to Chjimes, where i met my friend Adrian for lunch at Japanese Dining Sun, Chjimes. A sleek interior decor welcomed us as we walked up the stairs. With a predominant Japanese staff, the restaurant had a concept whereby the kitchen was within view of the dining area.

Authentic Japanese food was served, loved the miso soup, it simply puts the other versions i had at other restaurants to shame!

Adrian treated me to lunch today.. ya.. birthday lunch.. seems that this year, my birthday celebrations starting early!

After the meal, went on a wild goose chase looking for a gift for another friend of mine!!!

From Citylink to Raffles City to DFS orchard to Paragon .... the list just goes on!!!

Managed to find something, that i hope will be acceptable.. keeping my fingers crossed though!!

A pic of the X'mas tree in Takashimaya:

Baking baking...

Baked brownies yesterday..

Today, baked biscuits for evaluation textural characteristics.

Really tedious job of having to knead the dough to the same thickness and area for evaluation!

some pics of the finished product:

Baking is really not easy... eating is!!! Spent so much time trying to bake... while the analyzing of texture took like less then half an hour!!!

Haiz.. got to study for tommorrows Food Legislation Test!

I survived FYP!!!!!

6th Decemeber 2006!!! Deadline for FYP presentation...

Anyway, first thing in the morning, and we had to bake brownies to evaluate how to make healtheir brownies.. baked some using wholemeal flour.. which provided quite a nice texture to the brownie!

Headed to Sam's place for rehearsal for the presentation... ordered a birthday gift for myself.. yea.. my birthday is in 10 days time.. can start counting down already!!! Ya.. seems so pathetic that I got to buy my own birthday gift, cos no one ever remembers my birthday.. that has been the case since primary school.. cos my birthday is always during the term break!!!

Not to sure if it was a blessing in disguise since my FYP presentation time slot was at 1730 hrs. Thankfully, i think we were rather well prepared for it.. for the question and answer session, we only stumble for one question, the rest of the questions were pretty well handled.

Heard this pretty old song today.. its entitled "Sometimes when we touch" by Dan Hill... it certainly evoked a lot of memories in me.

And sometimes when we touch
The honesty's too much
And I have to close my eyes and hide
I wanna hold you til I die
Til we both break down and cry
I wanna hold you till the fear in me subsides
At times I'd like to break you
And drive you to your knees
At times I'd like to break through
And hold you endlessly

Blogging about food????

Was checking out where my visitors get referred to from when i came across this!!!

Someone checked google for "food blogger singapore ivan" and google listed my blog as a search entry!!!!

Guess all my entries about making noodles, unhygenic food, yogurt making, marlamade making has been the cause of this... Really wonder.. who is this "food blogger singapore ivan"?

Anyway, tommorrow's my FYP presentation!!! Had been so busy today rehearsing as well as analyzing for fibre in my product.

Hope everything will be alright tommorrow!

Oodles of Noodles

Made wan ton noodles in school today for evaluation of how the number of eggs affect the sensory characteristics of noodles..

First: mix the ingredients like eggs, flour, water, salt, sodium bicarbonate together

Next sheeting of the dough is done by machine to make the dough thinner

The last step of the process involves the mechanical cutting of the dough into noodle strips.. and voila!!!! Wanton noodles!

Making the noodles was sure not easy... next time i eat noodles.. will appreciate them more.. especially those hand made ones!

What i learnt from FYP

FYP might just seem to be another weird combination of alphabets to the unitiated. (It stands for Final Year Project). Having spent the last year on my FYP, I came to learn several values about it:

  1. People always seem to be busy over nothing
  2. They have a thousand and one other priorities over FYP
  3. Never trust anyone to do work without supervision
  4. Benchmarks and standards should be in place, especially so when working with friends.

On a very personal note, even though my FYP might seem to be a success to others, I find that behind this facade lies a very sad and disturbing story..

Know i know my FYP, next time, please don't work with me!

I hope i am feeling better...

I feel so tired lately despite the fact that I have sleeping quite a lot.. waking up late in the mornings too..

Trying to recover from my flu, migraine and mild fever. To make things worse, i feel so stressed whenever i step into school.. some how or rather, its developing into a phobia for me..

came across this game that someone posted on a forum:

http://www.eddiezone.net/flashgame/Stop_smoking.htm

Quite cute.. must try..

Troubled

Really feel troubled these days. Not to mention the fact that I am physically sick.

I dont understand how things could have turned out this way, i suddenly feel like i am a victim of circumstances and that no one understands me, even, some people avoid me like an epidemic..

Hope things will be better..

All's Well.. That (didn't really) Ends Well

Had a relatively short day in school today..

Thankfully, lost item was found... but still quite shocked at how such stuff could happen.

Was busy rushing from place to place today.. first to City Hall for lunch with my friend at Chin Chin. Went into Actually at Seah street.. Nice stuff as usual. Saw this belt made of the inner tubings of tyres.. really interesting how people can recycle stuff.

Next rushed to Outram area for submission of some documents and then back to school again for meeting..

Seems like the whole week was spent darting from place to place..

Anyway, overall feelings for today is still on the topic of white lies: yes, they might seem to be good in a sense that it doesnt harm to such a large extent.. but yet at the same time.. its still a lie.. so what to do?

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Lost in space

I cant believe that something so important will get lost today...

And i hope that something can be done by the relevant authorities to prevent such stuff from happening again... It's such like that can happen in an aspiring world class institution..

Utterly disappointed... Hope something can be done!

Deadline... Dead Beat...

Today's the deadline for FYP report and log book!!!

Had a hard time printing my report last minute in school.. There's a huge crowd all queuing to print... also, the stupid system in school.. only allows us to top up credit using EZ link card and somehow or rather.. it discriminates against Giro-linked EZ link card users like me...

Therefore had no choice, but to find alternative venues for printing.. went to Holland Village, hoping that the Internet cafe had printing services.. but sad to say... colour printer was down...

Thus, had no choice, had to take a cab all the way to Century Square.. buy printer ink cartridges and go to MDD house in Tampines to do the printing.. it took such a long time to print on the deskjet printer.. but i enjoyed watching the crocodile show "some Thai legend of some river" at his place..

Finally after printing, he went to bind at his place and realised i was late for my Seminar on Functional Foods at Republic Polytechnic, thus took a cab to rush all the way down to its Woodlands campus without lunch.. (spent almost 30 over dollars on cab today!)

Attended the talk.. could hear my stomach rumbling as all the talk about functional foods simply only made me more hungry.. :p

Thus after the talk, zipped down to Clementi to eat western food at Botak Jones.. which really lives up to its name.. Damn good food.. damn good price!

Had a busy day today!! Dead beat!

The new Newton Circus of Bukit Timah

Think Newton Circus and is synomonous with it is: touting... gasp.. though illegal.. but its still carried out in Newton Circus...

Was at Cheong Chin Nam Road area for dinner today.. and my oh my.. the whole area is slowly evolving to that of Newton Circus!!!! Persuasive hawkers shoving their menus of their eateries right into your face as you walked by!!

Thai Food with Tiramisu

Today, while waiting for the shooting for the Spinnovex video..

went to holland village for lunch...

Had lunch at Thai Express with MDD, he treated me ... second time at thai express this week... 20% discount.. foods soso... guess, i prefer the more upmarket Thai Express Bistro at CityHall already..

Went over to Da Paolo to get some cakes... Tiramisu... so sinful and rich... as well as meringue... which someone had never eaten before.. haha...

The video shooting today was surprisingly faster then the Newpaper feature.. maybe not much NG scenes... so it ended pretty early...

So its back to tying up the loose ends for my report!

Choking on Orange Jam

Nearly choked on this innocent looking orange jam that we were making today for experiment..

Why? cos it was buffered with sodium carbonate to a pH of 5.5.. thus the taste was so horrible.. felt like having an asthma attack after eating it... gross...

Anyway.. rushing FYP report and appendix now.. so much things to do last minute.. reformatting.. tidying up work... wednesday the deadline for it!!!

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Food for destress

FYP report deadline is fast nearing!!!!

Today went to Thai Express Bistro at Raffles City, a slightly different ambience as well as menu, distinguished it from the many other ThaiExpress franchises. Had Garlic Beef with rice, the beef was amazingly tender.. and went well with the assortment of spices that accompanied the platter of beef.

After lunch, was supposed to head for National Library to continue touching up report and adding in stuff, but sad to say, it was raining so heavily.

Thus hopped over to CoffeeClub .. and had fresh fruits fondue... so sinful... and rich.. i think my nose is going to bleed already!!!

Anyway, i found the selection of fruits kinda weird for a fondue.. the mango, banana and strawberrries were nice with the chocolate coating.. but the kiwi tasted too sour and astringent..

The Price of Publicity

Today was the day that the reporters actually came down to school to interview my FYP group as a feature for the newspapers...

Trust me, it wasnt as easy as it was. Having to answer questions correctly and accurately..

Also, the photo shoot session was horrible.. so many NG scenes... we had to re pose, re shoot.. re pose.. re shoot.... so troublesome.. just for 1 feature....

I can imagine that this Friday, the video shoot session will even be worse... God bless me!!!

Monday, November 13, 2006

Vexed over SpinnoVEX

I'm still up rushing my FYP report..

while the rest of my group members are either studying for test tml or already in dreamland...

FYP is taking a toll on me.. especially since its been selected for Spinnovex.. which means more work have to be done.. and more quality has to be emphasized on the report.

As such, I have been fine tuning.. re editing lots of stuff for my report..

really hope it will be a success...

hope can sleep early today.. so tommorrow when the interview session goes on.. I wont have panda eyes..

Fruits of Labour forming

The fruits of months of hard work is slowly forming.. and growing..

Just got confirmation that newpaper will be featuring my FYP soon.. so excited but nervous at the same time..

anyway, today went to VivoCity for some shopping.. bought myself a belt from TopShop.. went to this Candy Empire cos i wanted to buy some stuff.. its so crowded despite the recent saga about the shop discriminating about the handicapped on wheel chairs... was about to pay for my pralines... when i realised something!!! The security label on the tin was tampered with.. went back to shelf to check for others... Nearly all had their labels tampered.

I think they arent really coping with the hug crowds in the shop.. the layout and arrangement is more messy then the Millenia Walk branch.. Think i prefer to go to Millenia Walk...

Steak to me

Today I had rib eyes steak while waiting for the agar gel to cool down for my FYP...

nice succulent steak.... medium rare... not medium raw as what the person having lunch with me suggested.. lol...

After lunch, went back to FYP.. and did filling of sausages into casing... quite successful for today...

And I'm still rushing my FYP report!!! So many things to do, and it doesnt help when some people do not even give a damn about doing the report!

Anyway.. today had news that Newpaper might wanna interview us for our FYP next week.. dunno whether to be excited or not.. so many things to do.. and so little time!!!

Wednesday, November 08, 2006

Back to school... Then to library

Mid week wednesday...

another day of the stupid e learning week..

no school... but you gotta do your assignments online at home... complete waste of time.. especially since for us, there is FYP projects to juggle with.. so the homework load is extremely high..

Anyway.. went back to school today.. was using the bomb calorimeter to measure the caloric energy value of foods... then used the texture meter to determine the texture of food.

Next went to Bugis Junction.. to destress... ate at Siam Kitchen Ala carte buffet.. the spread of food was pretty reasonable... Look at the spread we had: we kept asking for chicken wings.. hehe... i think i know why.. duck jealous of chicken.. and wants to eat more chicken (private joke)

Then off to Bugis Library again.. been frequenting that place so often recently.. especially Level 7, reference area.

After which, feeling hungry from all that research and restructuring of report.. headed to the Japanese dessert restaurant at Bugis to eat some high tea dessert set. Not bad, but the taste can be further improved.. Japanese desserts just reminds me of the one I had with added ingredients at Paragon.. yikes.

Anyway, thanks to someone who gave me a tube of aloe vera gel to sooth my skin after it got irriatated thanks to the concentrated hydrochloric acid I worked with yesterday.

I got my 2nd net banking security device from DBS... its red in colour.. and comes with skins to paste on.. like I-pod skins? haha...

My first Security Token!

i had a really bad day in school today..
firstly, some b*tch pissed me off.. felt like going up to her and land her two tight slaps on her face. gee... been feeling very violent recently..

next, experiment today was so long.. so hot in the workshop.. not to mention the fact that there were plenty of mosquitoes.. think there's quite a lot of breeding places in school..

Anyway, got my first Internet Banking Security Token from Maybank today... guess more banks will be sending out the token soon!

The aliens have landed..

Today was the usual Wednesday half day of school kinda day... Had chicken rice at Chin Chin Eating House at Purvis Road.. Nice yummy roasted aunthetic Hainese Chicken Rice

Took this pic after I finished my research at National Library, at Bugis..

Found a lot of relevant topics for my research field, thank god the last minute stress of rushing report is working out to be eventful.

Look at the huge DHL hot air ballon right smack in the middle of the buildings..

The aliens have landed...

MRT sucide again???

First Chinese Garden MRT...
now Clementi MRT!!!

Title : Man killed by train at Clementi MRT station
Date : 30 October 2006 2225 hrs (SST)
URL : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...238456/1/.html
SINGAPORE: Westbound train services between Queenstown and Jurong East MRT stations were disrupted after a man was hit by a train, and died, at Clementi MRT station. SMRT says buses were provided for about 11,700 passengers who were affected by the disruption. This incident comes almost two weeks after a similar death at the Chinese Gardens MRT. Police have classified the death as an unnatural one and are investigating. - CNA/so

Its getting more scary as such incidents keep happening.. will it be a trend whereby people are driven to desperation to jump down MRT tracks and disrupt our transportation network?

Frankly, I think that the MRT system in Singapore was very poorly planned in the first place. When the MRT was built, there was insufficient design factors to cater for the disabled people. As a result, there were a lot of add ons to the exisiting stations. Even like Dover station, it was not pre planned, and after consideration again, only then the government build the station. Similarly, why wasnt the fact that people could have jumped down the MRT tracks and disrupt the system considered? If we can have sliding doors at the platforms for the underground station, why not for those above ground level?

Mosquito Madness

Cant believe after all NEA's publicity about how to prevent mosquitoes from breeding..

There are still containers lying around on the rooftop of a particular building in campus...
and it is nearly full with water from all the recent rain..

And the best thing is..

I cant seem to find an email to send this photo to the Estates Department.

No wonder there are so many mozzies in that area!

Never Trust TV shows

Why the strange title today???

cos i went to try out a food outlet that was featured on TV.. supposedly serving the famous kolo mee from Sarawak, which is supposedly a signature dish there..

When i went into the stall.. big mistake...

The noodles served were horrible... its more like koka noodles.. so instant noodle like.. not only that.. it was so expensive...

As my seat was facing the kitchen diagonally... seeing the methods of food handling in the establishment.. only made my appetite wane.. not to mention the fact that every table had this container of chilli with no serving spoon in it.. god knows how many people have placed their used utensils into the container to get a second serving of chilli...

Another form of bad service was my hot drink of tea with milk was served without a spoon to stir the drink... and i had to use a chopstick to stir it!!!

Heres a pic of the noodle:

Let you decide from the pics if its worth eating..

Friday Fiesta

Gosh... I think I am going to do badly for my Food Legislature Test... most of the questions seemed alien to me.. i think i 'BS'ed my way too...

Anyway.. after that, I did some retail therapy in town with MDD to calm myself, especially after the traumatic test and stress from all the FYP happenings..

Popped into Zara to get a shirt.. which i will probably wear for the launch of my product, if successful, in the upcoming Spinnovex exhibtion. Luckily, this time i only had to pay less then 10 bucks... cos i used my Zara vouchers redeemed from UOB Credit Card.. Thank god.. haha..

Had lunch with MDD at OmuRice at Takashimya Basement Food Village. Second time there, had my usual Curry Katsu OmuRice. Yummy.. miss it!

Next headed to the various supermarkets to look for processed meat products to note their nutrionary levels.. It was like playing SuperMarket Sweep today.. We went from Cold Storage Takashimaya to Jason's at Paragon to Carrfour at Plaza Singapura. The search was pretty eventful, at least got something substantial to boost my findings.. hehe..

Anyway, for the first time today, someone actually treated me to Thai Express, but to drinks only.. and worse still, using my $10 voucher... haha...

Sometimes... its good to explode...

I had a bad explosion of emotions today...

Simply couldnt cope with the pressure and stress that has been taking a toll on my emotions..

I just exploded at someone today.. but things seem better after we talk to each other and iron out the differences..

Maybe sometimes, its good to explode.. cool down.. sort things out..

Anyway.. thanks to Hup Lee Angels... you know who u gals are.. for the help..

Sensory Part 2

Did round 2 of my sensory evaluation again today... results seem not too bad.. people accepting my product. which is quite a good sign.. hopefully, it will be equally successful after the launch....

Anyway, got this letter from the bank.. informing me that i will be receiving my security token for online banking soon.. more and more banks are issuing this security token.. guess i will have a whole lot of such stuff from the various banks in time to come..

Quite dumb to have so many such security tokens.. why cant MAS just issue a fixed one? or maybe use the handphone as a common platform for security..

Imagining having to carry all your security tokens overseas to do transactions....

Pretty ironic, since internet banking was meant to be convenient.. yet now.. it seems not so..

Tiring Public Holiday

So tired.. despite the fact that its a public holiday and there's no school..

but i am actually stuck rushing my reports and stuff..
cos for the past few days or even weeks, I have been so engrossed in doing my FYP reports and planning the work to come.

To make it worse, I got blamed for something by someone today.. pretty in a pissed mood now..

tommorrow, i will having a sensory session again.. I hope the results will be favourable, might decide to modify my recipe abit.

keeping my fingers crossed.

5 cents - Still Legal Tender?

Today I went to a coffee shop which was located below a multi storey carpark at Dover area for lunch. Upon ordering my drinks, I was about to pay the auntie 2 - 5 cent coins when that stupid b*tch told me that she doesnt accept 5 cent coins, if i wanted to pay 5 cent coins, she will return them back to me the next time i go there... and even threatened me to think wisely... such aduacity!!!! I am going to complain to some monetary association.. and make that auntie pay... sentence her to drown in a sea of 5 cent coins.. I dont see why she cannot accept 5 cent coins, especially since that Singapore Mint still deems them as legal tender.

Think that fat auntie is just too lazy to carry the surplus coins in her pouch bag. Man, she should accept more coins just for her own good - to work out those excess fats!

Anyway... I had sensory evaulation on my product today... pretty good response from the younger generation who preferred it more...

Wedding - The Time of one's life?

Just came back from a wedding dinner... ok.. I don't really know the groom..

It's amazing how you get invited to weddings, especially to someone you dont know... Dinner started so late at about 8.30pm...even though the invitation stated 7.30pm.. Guess local Chinese wedding dinners still start late and end late.

Throughout the wedding dinner, was bombarded by dialect songs.. really made me wonder if I was at a wedding or a Lunar Seventh Month Ge Tai... Blasting loud dialect music sung by starlets...

Another thing that amazes me most is the 'Yum Seng'... which is like so passe... Why cant a simple cheers do....

Speaking of weddings, the next person who asks me when it will be my turn will get it from me.. cos so many people asked me this question at the wedding... Next time, I go funeral wakes, I will ask them when their turn is...

Morning of Broken Glass

Went to school this morning.. and I noticed that the bus stop had shattered glass fragments littered all over... whipped out my Ipaq and got this picture which i sent to STOMP...

It was featured on the portal:

Anyway.. rushed from place to place this morning.. first to school to meet my lecturer at 8 who offered a lift all the way to Bedok Shimei East Kitchen for an industrial visit for HACCP module. Reached the factory before 9 and we only had like an hour to make observations and note down details on the processes before leaving the place at 10 in order to reach school in time for another lecture that starts at 11.

Thankfully, the lecture was a short one... after which, headed down to Holland Village Thai Express for a FYP discussion with my lecturer... The food there seems to be the same old few dishes. Think its time they created some new Thai dishes to jazz up the menu.

Viva La Vivocity

Today went down to VivoCity at Harbourfront!!!

It's such a mega mall.. I see brands like GAP, Zara and more... Candy Empire was there too... the fact that it was not open yet made Doug sad.. haha..

Ate at Carl's Junior, cos we couldnt really navigate around there and were simply too hungry to further explore on a empty stomach.

Went to Zara to take a look.. hoping for some inspiration for the annual CLS Dinner and Dance, which theme happens to be retro.. and someone just had to try the pink floral shirt.. must admit that it looks very nice and retro on him though.. haha..

And since Candy Empire was not open at Vivocity, we headed to its flagship store at Millenia Walk to buy some stuff.. seeing all the sweet delectable candy just made me go weak in the knees.. Bought some Australian GB nougats.. really missed them from my recent Australian trip, Doug recommended me some honey coated Macadmia Nuts which tasted really nice and crunch.. The most expensive and sinful thing I bought was this box of Hazelnut Pralines from Ernest Hillier which is simply melt in your mouth. It came in this very neat looking metal cannister.

An act of Sabotage...

I suddenly feel so terrorized...

Its the 3rd time that one of our FYP major ingredients went missing.. It seems too much to be a sabotage from someone to stop us from proceeding on with our development, especially since the product is going to be launched pretty soon.

Another thing that proved the fact that someone is sabotaging the projects was that the oven that was meant to be for shelf life test was tampered with. Someone had set the oven to a temperature of 100 over deg Celsius and the contents of the oven all were carbonized, i heard. Even though my products were not inside, I still empathic with the other groups that had their products in the oven.

The sounds of silence

This is a backdated post summarising why i have not been blogging about stuff recently..

Been badly affected by the number of incidents happening in my life..

Seemed like the whole world came crashing down.. until i saw the light and inspiration..

Nearly Lost But found..

I regained something that I nearly lost today... seriously don't know if its a good thing or not.. but I hope things will be like usual...

Anyway, was nearly lost today as I had to make my way to Lorong Chuan to collect samples for my FYP project... Luckily, my navigation skills were pretty good and I had common sense..

Had nice yummy Haagen Daaz Ice Cream at Junction 8 after collecting samples... a good way to chill out on a hot day...

Recently, I have been very tired and weary. Hope tommorrow will be better!

Confucius Confusion

Confucius: "A man who has committed a mistake and doesn't correct it is committing another mistake. "

Life is so complicated. What would you do when one fine day, one of your close friends came to you and admitted that he did something wrong and tell you a lie to cover up for his bigger wrong doing?

Only after further questioning, does he finally admit the full story of what he had done wrong. A case of lying or a case of admitting his mistake that he did something really wrong?

Should one thus be angry and sad?

The answer is so confusing.... Oh Confucius, confusion is all around...

Yummy yummy...

Did a little sensory evaluation on my FYP product today...
its pretty nice!!!

We tried both ways of cooking.. frying and steaming.. nearly burnt the lab down when a small flash fire appeared on the pan over the induction heater.. pretty scary!!!

Lecturers found the version of my product nice.. so now got to work even harder...

Today went to Bugis Lee Kong Chian Reference Library... they have a very effecient security system whereby you are not allowed to bring in bags bigger then A4 and no printed papers... Reason being that section of the library is not meant for studying..

Was stopped by the security guard when I attempted to bring in my file, which consisted of lecture notes and stuff.. He brought me to the counter and i told the ladies there, if i cant bring in my stuff, how am i going to do research. It's kinda absurd that they actually prevent people to go in to study, which is making good use of the facilities.. would they rather prefer to have ah peks and ah mas sleeping in there?

Answer to my prayers..

Finally came up with quite a successful sample for FYP today..

I shant really reveal what this is first... until the right time.. maybe till next year SPinnovex.. hehe

Been working really hard.. busy with reports and numerous trials recently, somemore with the bad haze levels from yesterday which reached as high as PSI 150, I think i am going to fall ill soon!

Ban on Camera Phones in Army Camps..

The spread of videos taken in army camps or during reservists trainings on popular video webhost has lead to Mindef banning the use of camera phones in army camps. Such a move has indeed brought about a debate on whether such an action is indeed justifiable.

While it is in good in a sense that it helps in maintaining security, the number of handphones without cameras is fast decreasing as more and more handphone manufacturers are placing camera features to supplement the basic function of a mobile phone.

Banning camera phones and devices that can record images can be implemented easily, but can the leakage of classified information be controlled especially in times of modern technology whereby one can have access to a wide range of chatrooms, internet forums and blogs. Take a look at the STOMP website, much information about reservists or funny happenings in camps are frequently featured there.

Thus while it is easy to ban devices, it is even harder to control human behaviour.....

Chang Er, Chang Er.. Where Art Thou?

The haze been pretty bad on a Mid-Autumn Night, I can hardly even see the moon at all!

What's mid autumn without a moon to appreciate?

Anyway, i have been rather stressed today.. rushing from lab to lab to do my FYP... Really keeping my fingers crossed that the formulation will work!

Someone criticized my FYP product today.. been facing some negative comments from people who feel that it looks weird, tastes weird... I guess the mentatlity and acceptance of such a product is not there yet.

But nevermind , I shall work even harder.. Like how the song "Beautiful by Christina Aguillera" goes:

'Cause you are beautiful
No matter what they say
Words can't bring you down
Ohh no'Cause you are beautiful
In every single way
Yes words can't bring you down
Ohh noSo don't you bring me down today
Time to work harder!!

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes...

The haze condition in Singapore is getting really bad...

Just by looking at the number of pictures that are posted up onto the Stomp, Straits Times Online Portal, it looks like smoke is really getting into the eyes of Singaporeans..

Figures shown by NEA indicate an average figure of below 100... but i really wonder.. such a figure might not actually reflect the severity of the haze at the particular time and area.

Was at a neighbourhood shop earlier in the evening and noticed a corner that had mooncakes on display... upon closer inspection.. saw that they had pineapple tarts and peanut puffs available too.. which kinda reminds me of like Chinese New Year.. Even the packaging looks like those for CNY.. scary thoughts..

Lobster!

No...
not the edible kind..

I got a lobster aka yabby as a pet today!

Pretty active guy.. refuses to stay still for a minute!!

It's been trying to escape from its tank!

Sorry for the blur pic, its due to the fact that the little bugger refused to pose for a shot!

Anyway, today, I suddenly feel the drive in me again for FYP.. it dwindled over the holiday period... but now, I am starting to feel the effects in me again.. Like cafffeine from a cup of espresso taking effect...

Hope, the drive will stay!!

Really Sweet Ad...

Here I am blogging even before school starts on a mid week wednesday...
School starts late on alternate wednesday cos there is no lab sesssions going on...

I saw this ad on you tube.. its really romantic and innovative...

A sigh of relief...

Heaved a sigh of relief when my product for FYP came out looking pretty fine..

In fact several of the lecturers said it tasted very nice. Our lecturer in charge even gave me an 8/10 rating... At long last, the FYP is heading somewhere.. but still a long way to go.. must continue to work harder to improve on other factors...

Wish me luck!! And must support my product, ok?

FYP in progress

Finally my FYP having some progress... stayed back in school after lessons to do some trials..

thankfully, there was space in the lab for us to do the trials...

Look at all the white stuff... in the mixture.. thinking of something fatty and sinful?

Not to worry.. it's going to be healthy.. hehe..

cant reveal too much details here at the moment.. will do so at the right time..

quite comforting in a sense that at least FYP is progressing and not being stagnant..

Over 1k visitors

Ever since the Chicken Katsu Curry saga that I posted on my blog, I have been receiving a steady stream of about 100 viewers a day.

I thank you for the support, and to the numerous emails to me asking me about the name of the restaurant... hehe.. its a secret! Not too nice to do washing of dirty linen in public, lest i get sued for exposing all their emails here on my humble blog...

To all the guests to my blog, please feel free to air your opinions at the comments area.. or use the shoutbox!

Once again, thanks for visiting!

Hooked on that feeling....

Hooked on that feeling...

yea..

nopz.. not on drugs that turn me high.. but rather.. I have been hooked to the rose petals tea that i bought from Tangs yesterday. Apparent benefits are rose petal tea is mildly sedative, anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory, and can be used to help reduce high cholesterol levels.

Just what I need from all that stress that FYP and school working is giving me..

Chicken Katsu Curry Saga

For those who are interested to find out more about the saga... here is what the manager replied to me today:

===========

Fri, 29 Sep 2006
First and foremost, on behalf of my team, please allow me to express my deepest apology to the unpleasant dining experience at XXXXXX Jurong Point.

We view your feedback with utmost seriousness, upon receiving of your email, I have personally conducted an investigation with the Duty Chef in charge. Apparently, he shared with me that the piece of chicken was to be discarded after he checked it had poor quality. He instructed one of the kitchen assistant to record the weight before he throw but this kitchen staff had misunderstood him and put it back to the chiller. Unfortunately, another Kitchen staff used it with out realizing it when there was an order came in.

The company Product Development Quality Assurance Chef was informed and corrective action was rectified. The outlet chef has given me his assurance this would not happen again by making sure that more follow-up food quality inspection during shift will carry out and also to check on the cook food before it is taken out from the Kitchen to our customers.

As to my teammate who attended to your complaint, I have counseled her not to give irresponsible reply to our customer before she makes any investigation. She apologized for her unprofessional way of behavior and promised she will be more tactful in future. As a head of department I am really embarrassed by my staff poor knowledge and handling skill. With no reservation, please accept my earnest apology.

The boxes of dessert mochi and the coronet (scones) were displayed on shelve and normally they will be consumed on the same day. In additional, we often give advice to our customers to keep unfinished dessert in refrigerator for overnight if they can’t finish on the same day.

In order for us to up keep our promise to provide good quality food to our customers at all time, we have decided to get our new central kitchen to beHACCP certified by December this year and also all our new and upgraded restaurants. HACCP is also called Hazard Analysis and Critical ControlPoint. It is a way to ensure all our food preparation is safe when it reaches our customers.

We value you as our customer and sincerely hope you could give us another opportunity to serve you in the near future. Please contact me at ********* shall you need further clarification or information from us.
===========
to which his email, I replied:
***********
Hi
Thank you for your reply regarding the above mentioned incident.
I applaud your organisations decisions to incorporate HACCP in your central kitchen. HACCP is a preventive system of quality control which when properly applied can be used to control any area or point in the food system that could contribute to a hazardous situation whether it be contaminants, pathogenic, microorganisms, physical objects, chemicals, raw materials. As a Food Technologist, I feel that it is therefore, a systematic approach to be used in food production to assure food safety especially to end consumers.
However, upon reading the details in your reply, it has come to my attention, that the main factor in the incident highlighted to you was due to miscommunication. As you mentioned earlier about how the Duty Chef had meant to discard the rotten piece of meat while the kitchen staff placed it back into the chiller.
Even with a HACCP certification scheme in place in a food processing plant, there can still be miscommunications within the factory staff which can still put food safety at a risk.
This is not the first time I ate something bad at your group of restaurants. I am a regular at *********** Branch. There was once I ate a plate of sushi on the conveyor. The branch manager, *****, did an excellent job then!
I understand that such incidents are isolated and are unavoidable as the plates of sushi keep circulating on the conveyor and it is indeed hard to keep track ofthe actual time the food is on the conveyor, especially in Singapore where our conveyor sushi technology is not as advanced compared to Japan whereby each plate of sushi is barcoded and a flicker would automatically discard plates of sushi that havebeen circulating too long on the conveyor to safeguard consumer's safety. They even have conveyors that help keep the food chilled too, reducing microbial growth and enzyme activity on chilled meats.
Therefore, the point I am trying to drive at is the level of customer service that the restaurant should provide in such a scenario. Instead of pushing the blame to the fact "that the meat was kept too long", more assertive words could have been used. The staff should also have asked the customer if he/she would still like to have a new set of the meal. A waiver of the usual service charge would also have been appropriate, as in what most restaurants would have done.
Fortunately, the chicken was not served to young children or the elderly as their taste buds would notbe as sensitive to detect the spoilage, or a severe food poisoning/intoxication could have occured.
I thank you for conducting the investigation. I would still continue to dine at your group of restaurants as it offers great dining atmosphere.
***********
CASE CLOSED!

Mooncake Madness

Mid Autumn Festival also known as Mooncakes Festival is fast approaching...

To me, the mention of autumn reminds me of falling leaves and dying vegetation. A scene reminiscent of such a feeling took me by surprise today when i was shopping along Orchard Road. The left overs of the plant decorations after the IMF in Singapore.

Anyway, today I ate at this eatery, OmuRice in Takashimaya. Ate chicken cutlet curry rice... Yea.. the bad incident earlier this week does not deter me from one of my fave dishes.

After which, went to the mooncake fair at Takashimaya Square. Lots of vendors, lots of varieties of mooncakes. As usual, the crowd was humungous, and so was the number of used toothpicks on the carpetted floor.

Think the trend this year, is to create healthier alternatives of mooncakes with fruit fillings, lesser sugar, some even created mooncakes from jelly and yogurt. When I was there, many vendors were promoting sugar free mooncakes, but when quizzed on the kind of artifical sweeteners used, many were tongued tied. This shows the importance of product knowledge is of utmost importance is one is to promote a particular product.

I still prefer the good old varieties of mooncakes. Why?

Cos all the other forms of 'new age' mooncakes are not unique to mooncakes. Instead, the represent another form of food.

For example, we have durian flavoured mooncakes, what could be better then eating the real fruit itself? People rather pay more to eat a processed form of durian in the form of mooncakes which probably has flavourings, colourings and even preservatives added.

Flavours like tiramisu are best ate in its original form and not in mooncakes as the orginal appearance and looks are all lost.
