Launch of FIRC

Was in Singapore Polytechnic today for the opening ceremony of the Food Innovation and Resource Centre. The Guest of Honor was the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Lee Yi Shyan.

I actually had the opportunity to speak to him about my products.
He even mentioned about my product in his speech :

The Singapore Polytechnic, which has a well-established food technology programme and a good track record for consultancy services to local enterprises, will
manage the FIRC. For example, I understand that the Polytechnic has helped
develop first-in-the-market products such as low-sodium, low fat Chinese
and microwavable Asian ready-meals. With the Singapore Polytechnic’s
assistance, the companies only took nine months to translate their ideas into
actual products on the market. SMEs can look forward to working with the FIRC to
come up with more innovations like these and bring them to the market quickly

It was certainly an event worth going to network and know more people in the industries... and of course to get people to vote for me... as the voting ends tonight!

Rushing with preparations!!!

Had to go back to SP today to prepare my booth for the launch of FIRC tommorrow..

All the booth preparation, posters, banners layout and everything was settled by me. Had a hard time trying to straighten and fix it up onto the display board..

After I left that area, i zipped down to get all my other stuff prepared, bowls, plates, toothpicks, blu tac, velcro tapes, etc for the big event.. cant afford to screw things up in front of the minister...

Hope things will be fine tommorrow.. though I have already gotten SMS and phone calls telling me that my poster is in bad condition!!! yikes!

Shopping... the official first day of the GSS!

Its the first day of the Great Singapore Sale today..

Went down to Singapore Expo to check out my products on showcase by the SIFST.

Then down to Aquarama, which was a tad bit, erm, disappointing, this year... I was pretty shocked by how the fishes were like struggling to stay alive in their tanks..

Decided to do some shopping, so headed on down to town to shop, first stop at Tangs, was to get a pair of leather shoes which was on 50% sale and a further 6% rebate... so definetely worth it!

Then to G2000 to grab some long sleeve shirts to make use of the DBS promotion.

Grabbed a copy of Shin Min daily to check my ad today. Quite a large and impressive write up..

Congrats on Graduating!

Congrats to all CLS students who graduated today...

You would have probably know by know that I am very unphotogenic on cam and in real life.. sorry about that.. hope it did not spoil ur graduation..

nonetheless, I wish everyone all the best!
Let me share my personal views on life in SP...
I entered SP after army. Being on an older age, I had little, or almost no friends due to a generation gap. Perhaps thats what the army churns out after spending 2 years with them.
My life in SP was not a colourful one... I did not have fantastic results... no fantastic friends.. no fantastic CCAs... but what remains deeply etched into my memory, will be the Food Flavours Lab (I know you have seen this in the video)... I really had my most memorable times inside.. other then FYP, other then the flavours practical test... the training for the practical test.. it all brings back warm memories to me whenever i think about it.
One of the reasons why i did not turn up today during the ceremony was because I had to rush to many places for meetings... the other was that I felt insecure.. will people be jeering at me when they see my graduation video? Will people be talking behind my back? Will I be the only one helping other people take photos and not being inside the photos?
ytirucesnI... I lost it all...

Nice song on TV

Like this song on Channel 8 drama serial, titled Mars Vs Venus.. really meaningful lyrics

Would you be there by Ken Chong, composed by Redwan Ali

Song in mars vs venus show

If I were blue, would you be there for me,
And whisper in my ears that's okay,
Would you stand by me, let me hold you tight,
And say you love me one more time.

If I feel good, would you slow dance with me,
And touch my lips with tender love and care
Would you die for me, would you run with me,
And never look back..

Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Would you be there to love, to be with me?
Would you swear that your love is always true?
Would you say that you'll always be the one,
to take my breath away?

Being in the right place at the right time..

I cant imagine going to a foreign land to work at the tender age of 18, which is why, I give thanks today for being in the right place at the right time...

I can hardly imagine how could life ever be for me if I was born elsewhere..

Even though, sometimes I can whine pretty badly about how stressed life is.. how tiring it can be.. the woes.. and the tolls... I am pretty fortunate that I had proper education, have enough to eat..

Basically, I think I have fufilled the Physiological and Safety needs according to Maslow's Hierachy of Needs.. however, as for love, esteem and self-actualization, the needs are still pretty far away...

Friendship to me, seems like a nearly impossible thing to achieve in the next phase.. how many are actually true?

River Raft Race...

Went down to Clarke Quay to support the event today..

I must say that Clarke Quay has really changed a lot... especially with all the Pirates of the Carribean publicity.... with huge words "Welcome to Singapore!"

Twinz Sausage D'lite was also made on sale there.. all proceeds went to charity.

Though it was pretty hot and warm on a Sunday morning, it was a meaningful event. Lots of activities taking place concurently from the main event, the river raft race, the national food and heritage tour, rock climbing and others..

I checked out Central.. the new shopping mall.. nothing much avail there.. most of the stores were not fully opened... in fact.. i would say.. not all of the shops there were heard before elsewhere... the food court had a very nice view of the Singapore River.. but sad to say.. the food that I had there was not the lest matching with the view.
View of the interior design of the food court:

After lunch, I went to Suntec City and Raffles City to somehow go on a market research with my FYP students.. It somehow brought back fond memories of the times when we used to do market research at supermarkets the last time round for my FYP.. but its all over.... sad to say... nothing lasts forever.. not even a diamond..

Think Tripping...

Currently thinking of whether to go to China for a technical tour organized recently..

I have not gone on a holiday since I graduated.. Was supposed to go to Taiwan... but somehow or rather.. kept in view for too long.. Guess its all over...

But the costs of going to China for that few days is so expensive... sigh... to go or not to go...

The Diamond in my life..

To a perfectionist, the mere mention of a diamond evokes images of a clear, untainted gem, free from impurities....

Maybe to me, my life can be described as being as clear as diamond. We passed each other's path today without any impressions or smiles. As clean and clear as a diamond, what memories? what thoughts? what impurities... Life is like a diamond... clean, devoid of feelings... Is that the way I want things to turn out to be.

As I walked down Orchard Road in the evening, i just felt a sense of loss. The hustle and bustle of orchard road, the massive crowds crossing the pedestrian crossing, buskers playing music... all these contrasted with my bleak diamond. Icy cold.. devoid of feelings... Deja vu overcame me... familliar yet so strange...

Ensuring Food Safety Through Accredited Certification!

I just spent a whole day at the seminar at The Pines (formerly known as Pine Tree Club)

It was a pretty good and informative sharing session... got to know more people from the industry... thats when i really need the networking skills... :p

I smelt of oil...
rancid oil today when i boarded the bus back home from school.. Icant believe that lab ends so late at night.. during my life as a full time student, lab sessions did not take more then 2.5 hrs!

We had to fry keropok in various oils to evaluate the different kinds of oils and their effects when used to deep fry keropok.

Simple as it may sound.. but its really a lot of work....

sweaty and smelly from all the frying... eating keropok will never be the same again..

Look at all the keropok!!!

Huge amount of oil needed to fry them!

Life is like a box of chocolates....

.. you never know what you're going to get..

especially after reading the news recently..

About how 2 soldiers died after a plane crashed into a base in Taiwan...

and 2 separate incidents when a woman was crashed by a tree in Bukit Batok Park area and another PE teacher trainee was similary crashed too at Mount Ophir..

It makes me really ponder on the uncertainties in life.. one moment.. you are doing fine.. enjoying the glory and glamour.. the next, you are at the mercy of fate and nature.

Thus, my motto shall be.. live life to the fullest... live everyday as the last day of my life!

Singapore Food & Heritage Tour 2007

Busy planning some stuff for Singapore Food & Heritage Tour 2007...

This event will be held in conjunction with the Singapore River Raft Race (SRRR) on 20 May 2007 which is organised annually by the Singapore Polytechnic. The Food & Heritage tour is a land race that will require its participants to complete a designated route while savouring Singapore's local cuisine, culture, heritage & history.
Whilst visiting various attractions and places of interest in Singapore, participants (in groups of 2-6 members) will have the opportunity to sample a wide range of Singapore food in a competitive style.
Clues will be given leading to each of these places of interest (checkpoints) in the form of a crossword puzzle, word clue, fill-in-the-blanks, drawing etc. At each checkpoint, there will be some traditional games such as chatek, five stones, pickup sticks, marbles etc.

To take part in the Food & Heritage Tour a registration needs to be submitted with names of group members. A small fee of $6 is applicable to each member. Payment can be via cheque or cash payment at the Chemical & Life Sciences Department Office. Funds raised from the Food & Heritage Tour will benefit various charity organizations such as the Autism Children's Centre, The Haven, Clementi Student Service Centre and SP Overseas Community Service.

Trespassing for Charity's sake?

Today, this young girl trespassed into my work area.. despite seeing the fact that there was a no entry sign at the main door.. she came up to my office and asked my for donation!!!

Can you believe it?

Trespassing and still have the aduacity to ask for donations for whichever charity it is!

Especially follwing the news that Three charities de-registered by Commissioner of Charities on 02 May 2007 as reported by Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE: The Commissioner of Charities (COC) - exercising powers under new regulations which came in force 1 May on charity registration, public fund-raising appeals and large charities - has de-registered three charities.
These are the Children of Singapore Foundation, Children’s Lukaemia Foundation Limited, and Club Sunshine Limited (previously known as Kids-In-Distress Foundation Limited).
According to a news release by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), the COC has been monitoring the three de-registered charities since October 2006.
And the COC has found serious irregularities and suspicious transactions in the administration of the charities.
The COC has also viewed the intentions of the charities to be not exclusively charitable and has prohibited the three groups from carrying out any public fund-raising appeals.
The three charities were set up by Mr Rajendren Rajamani.
The office of the COC has made a police report against Mr Rajendren for further investigation.
Another organisation, the Kidney Fund Organisation (KFO), will not be granted charity status by the COC.
The KFO was set up as a society and applied for charity status with intentions to provide financial assistance to kidney patients and other needy patients with chronic illnesses in need of treatment.
The COC however felt, after careful scrutiny, that the organisation's intentions were not exclusively charitable as the bulk of donations, amounting to some $110,000 in 2006, did not benefit charitable causes.
It was found that only a small fraction of donations received were disbursed to a few beneficiaries, while some 75 percent of the donations were used to pay for the engagement of a commercial fund-raising company, Amanah Fitrah. The company is owned by KFO's Vice-President who is married to the KFO President, while a trustee of KFO is also an employee of the commercial fund-raising company.
Such a close relationship has posed a serious conflict of interest and the COC has decided to prohibit the Kidney Fund Organisation from any public fund-raising with effect from 3 May 2007. - CNA/sf/ir

Can we still trust charitable organisations these days?

I am so pissed with my ISP service provider..

Let's just name it Sillynet...

Today called to enquire about some discrepancies in my billing..
called the bill enquiries hotline but it was only an automated voice recording with no option for broadband.

So called the subscription dept to find out..

was put on hold for a whopping 20 minutes before a Sillynet operator picked up the darn phone...

After hearing my woes, she said i got to call the billing department, as she could not check my particulars for billing on my side, i told her about the problem and she said she cant do anything.. and of course being pissed, i demanded to speak to the manager.

She put me on hold again and claimed that the manager was engaged on the line.. after which, she miracuosuly was able to access my billing details and find the problem!!!!

Amazing isnt it??

That's just SILLYNET for ya!

Labour Day...

Dear Labourer,

Happy Labour's Day!!

haha... yes.. we are all labour, or rather slaves....

so its our day..

sit back and relax!

Chilled out today..

went to the fish shop to get some stuff and dropped by somewhere familliar that i used to go when i was, let's say, in Primary school..

BIG book shop should not be an unfamilliar store to primary school kids and their mothers..

I used to go there to shop for all the assessment book, ten year series and stuff..

it's amazing how the shop has existed for so many years without changing much of its interior arrangments and layout!

Here's a labour day joke to share:

The Labour Man Labour day's jest goes like this:

" My first job was working in an orange juice factory, but I got canned: couldn't concentrate.

Then I worked in the woods as a lumberjack, but I just couldn't hack it, so they gave me the axe.

After that I tried to be a tailor, but I just wasn't suited for it. Mainly because it was a so-so job.

Next I tried working in a muffler factory but that was exhausting.

I worked as a pilot but eventually got grounded for taking off too much.

Then I tried teaching but I couldn't make the grade.

I spent a few years as a Psychiatrist but everyone's problems drove me crazy.

I wanted to be a barber, but I just couldn't cut it.

Then I tried to be a chef--figured it would add a little spice to my life but I just didn't have the thyme.

I attempted to be a deli worker, but any way I sliced it, I couldn't cut the mustard.

My best job was being a musician, but eventually I found I wasn't noteworthy.

I was a pretty good eye doctor, but I could not stay focused on the job.

I worked a long time as a doctor.
I gave it my best shot, but I didn't have enough patients.

Next was a job in a shoe factory; but it never touched my sole.

The Energizer Battery Company hired me but then expected me to keep going, and going, and going...

I became a professional fisherman, but discovered that I couldn't live on my net income.

Thought about becoming a witch, so I tried that for a spell.

I managed to get a good job working for a pool maintenance company, but the work was just too draining.

I got a job at a zoo feeding giraffes but I was fired because I wasn't up to it.

So then I got a job in a gymnasium (work-out-center), but they said I wasn't fit for the job.

Of course, I tried being a secretary, but it turned out not to be my type of work.

My years as an exterminator were pretty good, but I got tired of the rat race.

Next, I found being an electrician interesting, but the work was shocking even thought it kind of turned me on.

I was a gardener for a while, but I didn't grow with the job even though I was racking in the money.

My career as a comedian was a stand-up success, but the critics thought I was a big joke.

After many years of trying to find steady work I finally got a job as a historian until I realized there was no future in it.

My last job was working at Starbucks, but I had to quit because it was always the same old grind.
