Next Stop.. Hwa Chong Station

The Straits Times today carried news on how Hwa Chong is campaigning to rename the Duchess station Hwa Chong station.

However, it seems pretty absurd to do so. By naming a MRT station near a school after that school. What happens when the school moves.. like what happened to RJC? Do we have another campaign to rename the station? It makes more sense to call the station Duchess station rather then Hwa Chong...

Anyway, if LTA approves the station to be called Hwa Chong Station. Maybe a new petition should be started to rename Dover MRT station to be called Singapore Polytechnic Station!

Big 50!!!

My readership has just reached 50 000!!!

Thanks for the new milestones..

Hope that you all will continue to support my blog!

Photo journalism: The now thing of the media

I was reading this series of events on the STOMP portal earlier whereby someone went to Sheng Shiong Supermarket and discovered that the frozen goods were not stored properly and snapped a picture. After that, the same person saw some biscuits that were labeled “For sale in Philippines only” and was about to take a photo when a staff accused her loudly of being a troublemaker and coerced her to delete all the photos that she took?

So what went wrong??? Taking a picture to stand up for something wrong seems to be what STOMP encourages its readers to do so. But at the same time, there is an apparent invasion of privacy when others have their pictures taken or have their premises photographed. Even though in this case, the reader did have an intention to actually query on the apparent compromise of food safety, it could have been handled more tactfully!

The role of such new media has caused privacy issues to be eroded. Anyone with a camera is a photo journalist, but, does anyone actually verify the information seen on the photographs?

Remember: Half empty or half full? It all depends on the way you see it!

'Sataying' in Touch!

Had satay at Lau Pa Sat today with the New Yorkers...

Yes.. the pictures all had been photoshopped, lest I get accused of posting up their pictures on my blog... haha...

It was a great fun night... the rain did not dampen our moods... we ate and laughed so much that people were looking at us... (not unusual anyway) haha... Satay and durians... perfect match! Yummy!

Go.. Going... Gone..

My friend sent me a big shot of this Chinese newspaper cutting with screaming big headlines that says "It's been many years, inevitably, I get tired" and sub headings "Lee Jiawei plans to study in Beijing University next year"

Well, after all the identity crisis, the flag incident that happened at the Olympics ceremony, our silver girl is going back to her motherland?

So much for loyalty?? Isn't they any local academic institutes of higher learning that can give our silver girl a place in their institutes, based on her contribution to our country?

Crazy Hoarse at MRT

The MRT seems to be a place for people to get mad... and shout crazily till hoarse (hence the title)

Now this lady is seen hurling obscenties at another one....

This actually reminds me of an incident that happened before Chinese New Year earlier this year.. was with my cousin crossing the road, somewhere near Middle Road across the National Library when this mad women started hurling obscenities at us when we did not even provoke her.. she even claimed to know black magic..

What would you do when you encounter such situations?

Money for the silver girls?

Have you ever wondered where the money for our Olympic silver girls came from???

I think most came from all our punters buying their 4D, Toto, big sweep....

Food for thought!

Acts of Nature...

... Wrath of god...

Why such a weird topic for the day??

It's because, during the paper for the Food Marketing and Project Management module.. the lights went off suddenly due to a circuit failure. Our exam venue was the only one affected!!!

So you can imagine how lucky or unlucky we were...

A pity the paper was not postponed..

Anyway.. here's a song that's in sync with the topic..

Nelly Furtado - Turn off the light

Tips for getting more readers...

Well, this post is specially for the numerous requests I got from other readers on how to increase their viewership of their blogs..

I've compiled a little list of them:

1. Make real connections : Interact with other bloggers to form 'networks'

2. Fix it before it breaks : If topics that you are currently blogging on have not been attracting readers for a really long time, say 1 year, its probably time to get a new topic!

3. Keep your readers close: Blog about something that your readers would be able to associate. No point whining about how it is raining in Singapore when it is snowing in Alaska!

4. Be Genuine: Be yourself when you blog! Do not over exaggerate on happenings! Acting cute is passe!

5. Law of focus: Be focused on the topics you blog. While it is good to cover a range of topics, it would be difficult to appeal to so many genre of readers!

6. Law of expansion: The more different topics you blog, the less focused your blog will be!

7. Law of contraction: Be focused, and readers of the common genre will soon flock to you!

A new weekly milestone....

I'm very thankful to all my readers...

A new milestone has been reached for this blog of mine... nearly 7000 unique visitors in a week...

Big deal, you might say... other prominent bloggers get more.... but to a lesser known fireopal.. this is a great deal..

Thanks for the support and I hope that you all will continue to visit my blog!

Nutritional analysis of Durians

Was eating durians earlier today.. and having the conventional occupational hazzards, I was wondering what is the nutritional analysis.
From, the king of fruits is apparently very low in Cholesterol and Sodium. It is also a good source of Dietary Fiber, Thiamin, Vitamin B6 and Manganese, and a very good source of Vitamin C.

So there you go, more reasons to feast on durians!

High Grade Puke? Maybe....

Two friends... two different gifts...

This picture was what was sent to me by my friend in an email today:

High Grade Puke... Certainly... the words on the food packaging just turns one off! It's apparently from the packaging of some confectionery from China...
This was what another of my friend gave me.. Ready to eat Bird's Nest from Hongkong.. a brand called Home of Swallows!
See the nice packaging and the use of royal colours:
The bottle of concentrate inside...

So if you ask me, between option 1 and option 2... the answer is pretty obvious, isn't it?
Haha... anyway, the exam for today was pretty ok... 1 down, 2 more to go!!!! Starting to burn more midnight oil soon.. maybe the bird nest will come in handy!

Excuse me, Do I look like an Entertainer to you?

With the spirit of 7th Month going on (pun intended) as well as the numerous getais going on in Singapore, it would probably need no introduction to what an entertainer is..
Was alerted to someone actually linked me from his blog using the tag 'Entertainment'
Apparently, this someone is also from Singapore Polytechnic as his blog says so.
I really don't mind being linked from there, in fact, I feel honoured.. but please don't call me entertainment, can???
I don't wanna sound like a clown...

If you don't listen...

I really wonder what Straits Times photographer, Desmond Wee, was thinking of when he took this picture of our Prime Minister during the National Day Rally...

which finger was it...

Don't ya think the title of this post matches the caption?

SAF Chao Keng: The Movie

I just find the animation in this movie so nice..

The way it is put across... cartoon like..

Anyway, today's been a stressful day at work... perhaps, its also due to the fact that the exams are coming this Wednesday...

I need durians... to destress... So "New Yorkers" reading this blog post of mine, what do you all think?

Stem cells to save the world...

What are stem cells???

Basically, they are unspecialized cells that gives rise to a specific specialized cell, such as a blood cell. C'elle has come up with a stem cell technology empowers women to safely and easily collect non-controversial, potentially life-saving stem cells found in menstrual blood.

Rather then donating blood and money, this new technology could enable women to save lifes by donating menstrual blood!

Today, donated organs and tissues are often used to replace those that are diseased or destroyed. Unfortunately, the number of people needing a transplant far exceeds the number of organs available for transplantation. Pluripotent stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat a myriad of diseases, conditions, and disabilities including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Read the C'elle Client Testimonial Looking at all these diseases, have you noticed that many of them are top killers in developed and developing countries?

Can you just imagine the huge potential benefits that will bring to Mankind?
Don’t just sit there waiting for something to happen… Ladies, you make a difference!!!

Check out C'elle Client Testimonial today!

Humping at the petrol station!

Identity Crisis??

While most Singaporeans are probably happy about Singapore's upcoming medal in the Olympics that will end a drought in the Olympic medals..

Here is what 'our very own' Table Tennis super star shared on China National TV her thoughts and views! A copy of the video has been uploaded onto Baidu. (Please click on the Baidu link to view, as the pictures below are all screen captures of the entire interview)
Presenter: Do you have such goals?

Lee Jia Wei: (I) hope in 2008

Lee Jiawei: I, myself , am from Beijing

Lee Jiawei: and am a Chinese (note the use of words China as in 中国人 and not 华人)

Lee Jiawei: I hope to be able to, on my motherland...Lee Jiawei:... and also my 'territory'Lee Jiawei: .. win a medal

Well our own star herself is getting confused, I really wonder if her Singaporean supporters will be in a similar state of confusion?

Hungry Ghost on MRT train

Yes yes, it's the 15th day of the 7th Lunar Month, the day when its the strongest yin energy in the entire 7th Month..

And I just had to encounter this hungry ghost on the MRT train..

Eating away so hungrily like there's no tomorrow.... can even smell from far what he's eating: Takopachi bacon! And the smell is so bad in an enclosed area!

How to avoid getting car park summons!!

I just read this on STOMP..

sounds so unethical:

I witness an incident at Bt batok cetral Pizzahut cum Macdonald carpark on 10
Aug 2008 round 7 pm. A certis cisco officer was there to issue summon for
parking offences.. Not to mention as it was a Sunday, there were plenty of
motorbikes, cars and vans parked there. What surprised me was that the owners of
the vehicles were actually the Mangers of the pizza hut n Mac. They quickly came
out address the officer. The pizza hut manager offered him pizzas
and pointed out to him the cars which belong to them. The Cisco officer ate the
pizza slices and ignored all the cars which were pointed out to him thou they
were parked at double yellow line.
Just because he ate the pizza
he failed to carry out his duty. He ignored the cars of the Pizza hut and Mac's
manager. The cars were their personnel cars not the company's cars too.
Definitely they are not there for loading or unloading of food. There is no
excuse why he ignored them. He proceeds to summon other cars which were parked
there. I felt that was not fair. If the other car's owners had given him Mac or
pizza would he have ignored them too? This is really a serious issues it can be
also considered bribery. I didn’t get a chance to snap photo as I was a distance
away but I noted down the Cisco officers' Bike number plate FS6860Z.

So next time you see a parking auntie/warden... stop all the excuses, please take out your handphone and call for delivery!!!

Global Brand Forum

Attended the Global Brand Forum 2008 at Ritz Carlton today..
Was deeply motivated by the talented speakers who gave true real to life examples of marketing techniques and campaings, eg the Macdonald's Mom's club, Dove's Campaign for True Beauty, etc!
It was indeed awe-inspiring!
Anyway, the presentation that I did for today went smoothly. I presented some 29 over slides, despite the fact that I was so tired after an entire days of events!!!

The day Earth ended...

We wake up every day to a brand new morning and a brand new day… but have you ever wondered… If it was the end of planet Earth, what would you bring along with you?

Sure you might say, we leave nothing behind… but would you really leave empty handed?

I would probably bring along my favourite, Goldkili Green Tea with Osmanthus Tea Bags… haha… yea.. I am admitting I am a tea drinker…

And I really cant sleep without this tea.. remember.. green tea does have mild sedative effects! Imagine all the trauma, when Earth is destroyed, I will certainly need something to calm myself down and put myself in the right frame of mind!

Anyway, if you are wondering about the objectives of this post, here is the answer: Well, this blog post is actually about the game Tabula Rasa also known as Operation Immortality: Leave your mark. Save Humanity. where you get to play for free online! Yes, free, you did not get me wrong!

Operation immortality is a game set in a era of terrorist attacks, greenhouse warming threats, genetic science gone awry! In this game, you have to save mankind and the human DNA! Its indeed a sight full of graphics and flash movies as you navigate your way through the site to find more information!

Work, work, work...

Here I am rushing my report and presentation for tomorrow's presentation alone, despite the fact that it is meant to be a group effort.

Well, I was kind of pissed off initially having to do the entire crap myself... But halfway through it all, I realised that the whole project actually helped in reinforcing the concepts of marketing that I have learnt, sort of a revision for my upcoming exams...

Anyway, another barrier has been broken, this blog of mine has reached 40 000 viewers!!!!

Hurray.. a new breakthrough for someone as low profile as me!

NS for Singaporeans....

A friend sent me this interesting video link on youtube recently...

Having completed National Service, this video definitely evokes strong emotions for me..

What do you think?

Lots of ' factual evidence' in the video too..

Durian Party!

Went for the SIFST professional series talk on the New Zeland market today... pretty brief but insightful one.

After the event, the usual click of friends termed "The New Yorkers" went to Clementi to eat durians... alfresco style right outside NTUC... nevermind the fact that it was unglam...

We were talking and laughing so loud that the ah peks seated nearby were looking at us.. The durians were relatively inexpensive.. for the quality that was presented to us. Not forgetting the affable uncle who gave us free durians and mangosteens to accompany the wonderful king of fruits!

It was quite a good experience for me.. cos I really felt that it was the company of friends that brings out the true 'taste' of durians....

Durians anyone?

Cups from Macs

Finally.. after weeks of gorging on Macdonald's...

My complete collection of the Olympics cups!

Sunday, August 10, 2008

Why do you call project work...

... project work?

When it's only one person, that is me, doing it..

I have been spending the entire National Day weekend rushing my food marketing report.. while the others should most probably be enjoying themselves without even checking on the progress..

Singapore Flag Touches Ground!!!

Looks like there is a newer hipper way to be a flag bearer..

Our national flag bearer, Li Jiawei, did so at the Olympics 2008... with the National Flag touching the floor on the eve of Singapore's 43rd National Day!..

I wonder how many extras one will get if that was a military parade?
Is there any pride in being a flag bearer as what she claimed to the media?

12 lotus

Another Royston Tan movie set to hit the silver screens!!!

12 lotus is yet another seventh month getai movie like its predecessor, 881..

apparently, the film maker is pretty obsessed with numbers like 4:30, 881, 15, etc

Hole Services in Singapore?

Scandalous as it just seems....

I just had to upload this picture on my blog:

Actually, I was telling this particular friend of mine when we were at Peace Centre.. that "hey.. look.. that shop has your surname.. its your shop!"

And she responded "my shop??? No.. it's HOLE SERVICES"

Anyway... I think she's going to spread some pen poison to me by giving these magazines:

Thanks anyway! Appreciate it!

Another Reason why you should not swim in the seas of Singapore

First we had bacteria that is normally found in feaces in the waters off Pasir Ris...

US Navy says sub leaked radiation since 2006 ....

From this article,

Officials also have told the governments of Malaysia and Singapore that the sub
made port calls to those countries while leaking the radioactive water...

So here's another reason why to stop swimming..

Die, Die Must take note!

A real life account extracted from:

Violence in Sim Lim Square, unit # 02-76

I just want to warn everyone to AVOID going to unit # 02-76 in Sim Lim Square. They are grotesque scammers that has the tendency to be physically violent to customers. I was one of their unfortunate victims. Their signboad says 'Evolution Gaming LLP', but as I was researching on the net, they apparently regularly change their store name. They used to be called MH Electronics, or Mobile House Electronics. And a neighbouring store that's unit # 02-72 also used to be 'Evolution Gaming'. They were also called 'Compact Camera'. I've read a lot of complaints from that store too.

Anyway, here's what happened. My girlfiend and I went to Sim Lim to buy a PSP. I know, it was quite stupid of me to go there for a PSP. It's all over the net that the last place to buy a PSP is in Sim Lim. I went anyway, thinking it's "not gonna happen to me" (i was dead wrong). So we went to different shops to ask for prices. The prices we got were 360, and 340.. complete with all the necessary stuff like battery, 4G card, cable, case, and modification. When we got to unit # 02-76 (Evolution Gaming LLP), they quoted us $308. That was too cheap.. but it was almost 9pm and I was just tired and wanted the PSP. So I said I'll take one. The sales guy was friendly. He's tall, fat, and had a lot of pimples on his face. He took our money and said he'll modify it in front of us. After the so-called modification, he showed the PSP to me... and it was lagging! He said the modification took much of the RAM and it needed an upgrade, and that we had to pay $200! Holy sh*t... and while he was selling the upgrade to me, he kept calling me 'my friend...'. That was just annoying. I said we don't have that kind of money, and we'd like to get our money back. From here, things got ugly. The store owner (tall, skinny, and also had a lot of pimples) started shouting at us, saying just take the PSP, the we're wasting his time, etc. And another guy tried to talk to us,this short little guy with glasses, squeaky voice, introduced as the store manager. He tried to explain about the upgrade. But we've heard enough. We just wanted our money back, and we were not leaving. Finally they said we could have our money back, but since the PSP has already been modified, we should pay the GST (wtf!). After much debate, I just said fine.. if that's what it takes to just leave this place, then ok. So they gave us our money, less gst (that's $21 - not bad, but still hurts). We were so pissed leaving the store. I decided to take a photo of the store premises so I could have a 'souvenir' for the event. Suddenly, this little guy with glasses (store manager, they say) started to slap me in the face! (I'm not sure if it was a slap or a punch.. looked like a punch, felt like a slap) He also shoulted at me with his small squeaky voice. I prepared to hit back, aiming at his small face.. but suddenly I see this tall lanky guy running from the store carrying a metal stool. And the fat pimply guy who tried to sell the PSP also came out running towards us too. The little guy's got backup! So now there's 3 of them, and one of me. I remember thinking, if I fight back, this is going to get ugly for me. But then, the short guy took a plastic chair and continued to hit me, as well as this tall guy with the metal stool! Unit # 02-76 Evolution Gaming LLP is situated at the corner of the floor. The beating continued until we reached the escalator. They hit me on the face, the arms, and body. My girlfriend was just shouting 'please stop!'. Suddenly they demanded for me to delete the photo.. i had no choice but to comply. After deleting (they continued to hit me by the way), Sim Lim security came in the scene. The little guy gave me one last hit on the body with his reliable plastic chair. After that, security called the police. The police came to talk to me, then went up to talk to the store owner (tall pimply guy). The guys that attacked me where no longer there (of course). We went to the police station, I gave a statement, they gave me a medical form, we went to the hospital to document the scratches I obtained from the attack. The police said that they were going to launch an investigation about it.

So now here I am writing about it. The net has got loads of warning stories like this about the scamming happening in Sim Lim. Let this be an additional story about it. I haven't actually read about any violence happening, so I think this is the first.

Reading up on the net, here's a few more stories/complains about unit #02-76 / Evolution Gaming LLP for scamming and bad service.

This one is when they were still called Mobile House Electronics Pte Ltd (signboard MH Electronics): http://forums.************

Here's another one about #02-76 where they have bad attitude:

Here's another one about Evolution Gamming LLP:

And another one for Evolution Gaming LLP:

And another yet one... "Extreme Lousey Service in Sim Lim Sqare". This time it's in #02-72 but still called "Evolution Gaming LLP" (it's either they like exchanging signboards, or its the same owner):

Here's another on #02-72, but it's no longer called "Evolution Gaming".. This time their signboard says "Compact Camera": http://forums.************

And another one on #02-72: http://********.com/forums/2535/topics/313622

Please, if you wanna get a PSP... do your studies first!

Life is like a movie...

Why so???

Cos just because part 1 is good... part 2 might not be as hyped. For example, Money No Enough might have been a excellent show, but its prequel could not have been as good. Similarly, when you take a course, just because part 1 of the course is good, part 2 may not be as good.

Does that necessary mean that I enjoy the course/movie which is why I am in it? Being in a movie for example already means that I have spent the money and time to watch part of it, so why not just continue with it...

Watching a movie does not certainly mean endorsing it...

I am just so pissed today!

Restaurant Translate Server Error

Got this in an email from a friend today:

"Preparing for English-speaking visitors, a restaurant in China recently ran its name through an online translator, took the result, then purchased and mounted a large sign displaying the English version of their name: Translate Server Error." This one has been around for a couple of weeks but it's destined to become a classic.

Moral of the story, do not trust online translators word for word..

Sucidal Cover Version

I found this really nice cover of Sucidal.. originally by Sean Kingston on Youtube

Alejandro Manzano of Boyce Avenue acoustic cover of Sean Kingston - Beautiful Girls
