What's happening to Internet Radio Streaming Service in Singapore?

New legislature forming to stop the streaming of 'live' Internet radio in Singapore?

Apparently so, according the Power 98FM website:

It stated that Power98FM regrets to inform you that in view of pending legislation, Internet streaming of Power98FM has been suspended until further notice.

A check on Class 95FM also showed similar results that the service was not available:

Gold 90FM was also not spared too:And when I visited Symphony 92.4FM website and clicked on the Internet Radio Streaming Service, I was brought to this page whereby Mediacorp announced that their stations are no longer streaming 'live' on the Internet from March 1st.
New legislature forming? Not too sure about it... Have not heard anything in the news.

One thing I know for sure is that other Singaporeans abroad will definitely miss the programmes!

SPH radio has "stopped" radio streaming without any announcement too. You can try their hyperlink in their websites

It could be the work of recording industries who would want to charge (huge?) licensing fees for playing their songs..a similar legislation was implemented in US, which is why I don't get class 95 here. :(

I was depending on Power98 for nice music and news back home - now have to stick to boring Chinese talk stations here in Shanghai.
*sigh*

chinese station like 93.3fm's live streaming still seems to be able to work.

It's most likely referring to Mediacorp legislation and not governmental. Insiders have been blanketed from revealing more but it seems that suggestions on the service converting to the paid form is a possibility.

And in the last screen capture above, these dumb nuts say

'
...Internet streaming for the stations are no longer available...'

when they clearly mean

'
...Internet streaming for the stations is no longer available...'

sheesh!

Ganga:

Then why suddenly stopped the service? And Power 98FM, Radio 100.3 are not belong to Mediacorp

So if that will be a paid service in the future, will it be launch soon?

aND Mediacorp legislation ? How can a private company make and enforce a law?

Ganga said...

Perhaps it could be a case of the broadcasters agreeing to roll out a paid service in tandem? I would not be surprised if Mediacorp has 'forced' the other broadcasters to join in the change as well.

As for 'Mediacorp legislation', I am referring to the rules that Mediacorp applies onto the respective radio stations and not Law per se. As a broadcaster, it will have its own legislation (ie. rules and regulations) to control all operations.

Sorry for the confusion and I hope that clears that up. Honestly, I am not sure exactly what is the play here and my comments must be taken as speculation at this point.

And it seems that even SPH papers are not interested in covering this story. sigh!

Just got a reply from Mediacorp:

Due to recent changes in Singapore copyright legislation which requires
us to pay licence fees to recording companies in Singapore, the internet
streaming had to cease while we negotiate with the Recording Industry
Performance Singapore Pte Ltd (RIPS), on the terms.

It was with great reluctance that we decided to take this step, but we
hope you understand that with these legislative changes coupled with the
difficulties of the present economic times, it is difficult for us to
continue this service to our listeners.

Made a query with MDA and just got the reply as follows:

Dear Sir/Madam

1. We refer to your enquiry under Feedback ID FB090306012248 for Regulatory Policy (excluding content & licensing matters) - Radio

2. MDA understands that the streaming of the Internet radio stations has been suspended due to MediaCorp's operational considerations, including commercial discussions with rights owners.

3. If you have further queries, please send us the feedback and quote your FEEDBACK ID FB090306012248 in the feedback.

4. Thank you.

Coupled with Jacky's findings above, the buck may very well be passed on to listeners in due course...

I have directly sent an e-mail to Prime Minister's office. I asked them to sponsor the streaming of information stations like sponsoring RSI in the past.

BTW, what is MDA's e-mail?

well just heard from mediacorp radio that online radio streaming at 4 mediacorp radio stations are up. one of them is yes933. I think Mediacorp had reached an agreement with the Recording Industry Performance Singapore (RIPS) to have the online streaming go live.
