What is Arbutus?

I came across this in the wet market today.. and was so intrigued by it that I just had to buy it!

Apparently Arbutus is misinterpreted to be from the word YangMei, also known as Chinese strawberries!

These sweet-sour fruits pack a punch even greater then strawberries! Actually they kinda remind me of raspberries too! Yang Mei is set to make its way as a super fruit as it supposedly contains a lot of anti oxidants and vitamins!

Also bought this lychees, marketed as Fei Zi Xiao or Concubine's Smile!

They are still packed in traditional look alike wood woven baskets... When opened, they reveal the fruits...

Succulent, juicy and with small seeds!

Don't they look like reptile eggs in a nest?

Disgusting Durian Crepes

I am a huge fan of fresh D24 Durian Crepes.. but this incident that happened recently seems just set to ruin my craves!

I was utterly disgusted and disappointed by the quality of products I bought from a store that has a chain hailing itself as the "No. 1 Durian Cake Maker in Singapore" on Thursday night, bearing in mind that the duration from the store to the refrigerator was less then a hour to prevent spoilage. When I consumed them on Friday morning, the products were already gassy and had a sour smell.. the crepe was already wet and soggy.

What dismays me is that this is not the first time that this incident has happened to me, and I was told before to keep the spoiled sample and bring it back to the same outlet for a refund. But who in the right frame of mind will keep something that is already going bad, or rather gone bad, with a repulsive odour in the fridge?

From a food safety point of view, I would like to mention that the product packaging does not have a batch code on the it, my question would be: How are the manufacturer then able to tell which batch of products were spoiled or have quality defects? Also, if there is a need for a particular batch to be recalled, how would this be facilitated?

I would certainly hope that this matter gets resolved fast, lest we have another round of severe food poisoning in Singapore!

Advertlets Payment finally in!

What could be more auspicious then the number 88???

Yes, it has been 88 days since when I should have received my payment from Advertlets in March when I cashed out the money end January...

After all the hoo haa.. the no replies to emails, etc etc...

The payment is finally in after some technical screwup last week which was apparently from Maybank's side ( as what Advertlets claimed)!

I shall be fair.. and say that Advertlets paid... but after a long wait indeed...

Just realised that I am almost nearing another cash out from them.. wonder how long the next cashout will take... sigh..

What's for dinner

I must say.. its another working day down.. One more day to the weekends...

Hanging onto it... hope time flies...

Dinner today.. was just simple.. Nasi Padang....

and a little mini D24 Durian cake for indulgence after nearly a week's of hard work!!!

I really wonder what's wrong with my HTC... the focus of the pic is horrible... so ghostly...

Scrubs

We all know Nursing, commonly defined as a science and an art that focuses on promoting quality of life, is a noble job, whereby passionate nurses are on their jobs nearly 24/7. So have you ever wondered about joining being in the nursing industry? Well, introducing Scrubs, a site whereby you will find career advice and inspiring stories, but beauty and fashion tips. This site is not another boring site that is full of lengthy words.

Instead, the site has a up close and personal touch to it, whereby readers are able to associate themselves with the writers, even though, they (the readers) maybe not necessary be from the nursing line. Take for example, the article on the site, What Nurses Can Tell Patients About Swine Flu, my thoughts on the article was that it came across as not only light hearted but also informational at the same time. By sharing true to life tips on how to prevent swine flu which is pretty common sense: to avoid those who cough, ask those who do to cover their cough (not with their hands but with a mask or something similar), practice good hygiene with hand washing and try not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth.

Such tips are indeed a good reference to all especially when swine flu seems set to spread around! Great site to read and learn!

Light me up...

Was treated to a nice dinner at The Firestation Restaurant at Spectra, which used to be the old Firestation at Bukit Timah...
Pretty nice, quiet place....
Cozy dim lights and all..
Even the menu was a little special... a small clip board.. with laminated pages of the menu.

Ordered this special Fish and Chips which had Hoegarden in its batter mix.. a little weird tasting, especially when it was cold.. all the oil started to ooze out..
Fried calamari rings were not that bad...
Dessert was special Creme Brûlée, which was both a treat to the palette and the eyes:

There was also a lucky draw for diners, which we filled in cheekily:Well, its a nice place... but probably wont go there for a meal.. just for a drink and maybe a dessert?

Abestos and mesothelioma

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral with long, thin fibrous crystals, such crystals include chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite and actinolite. The word asbestos has its roots from a Greek adjective meaning inextinguishable. The Greeks termed asbestos the miracle mineral because of its soft and pliant properties, as well as its ability to withstand heat.

Asbestos is toxic. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause serious illnesses, ranging from malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer, to asbestosis (a type of pneumoconiosis). Since the mid 1980s, many uses of asbestos have been banned in several countries. Mesotheliomas have been observed in people who were occupationally exposed to chrysotile, family members of the occupationally exposed, and residents who lived close to asbestos factories and mines.

People who are diagnosed with mesothelioma are often entitled to compensation, and working with an aggressive and experienced mesothelioma attorney make a big difference. Many manufacturers of asbestos have gone bankrupt over the years and only an experienced lawyer can help victims receive compensations.

Like many other dangerous products, the manufacturers of asbestos knew about its dangers before they revealed it to the public. As a result thousands of people were needlessly exposed to this dangerous substance

The statute of limitations for asbestos exposure and mesothelioma cases varies from state to state and it is important to learn about your specific rights so that your case has the best chances for success. Enlisting the help of a skilled Mesothelioma Lawyer experienced in mesothelioma litigation will help guide you and your family on the right path to the medical and financial support you deserve.

Blur me...

I wouldn't have discover this cosy nice getaway that is so near my office, if I did not go for lunch with a friend today!

Snugged right behind the main road, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.. is this nice supermarket... with an alfresco area for dining... lovely!!

Was there in the evening, take a look at the beautiful and quiet place:

Enjoying a simple drink and cake... unwinding after a stressful day of work.. pretty therapeutic if you ask me!

Even the words on the bottle cap of my Snapple sounds so profound..

Not Surprising...

Not too surprised when I got an email from Advertlets support, Jess Ong, apologizing for late payment again...

Yawn....

In fact, it is already very obvious that Advertlets is a bad pay master.. their CEO, Josh Lim, could still even promise me that my money will be banked in on the 15th of May 2009, today's already the 18th and they still ask me for a time extension...

Looks like the brand Advertlets is getting synonymous with non conformance

Update: Adverlets took 88 days to pay me... How auspicious!

Update on Soy Milk War in Ghim Moh Market

Late last year, I covered a series of stories on the ongoing Soya War in Ghim Moh market!!
After nearly half a year in operation... both stores are still surviving...
The newer store, which names itself Original Soya Milk/ Chin Chow seems to have more customers though:

As compared to the store that had existed for a longer time, SoyFresh:

The newer store is obviously more aggressive in its marketing strategy, with signs like 'Cheapest Soy Milk' in Singapore, this store charges consumers 60 cents per cup of soy milk as opposed to its counterpart, SoyFresh, which charges 80 cents per cup..

Really wonder how the war in Ghim Moh is going to end up, especially so when both the stall owners seem to be hostile towards each other. When I was there, I could hear them calling each other names as well as hawking their drinks at the top of their voices..

So will it be a battle of price vs quality?

Entrecard cashout received!!!

Got my Entrecard cashout of USD 2.00 from 2000 EC!!!

Here's the proof:

I think those that have not gotten their cashout applications approved need to wait a little while for the folks at Entrecard to process them.

Overall, waited about a week for the credits to be processed in order for funds to be send to my Paypal account!

Brand loyalty: Why so stringent..

Knocked off from work pretty late today...

and seems that all the people that arranged their meetings with me on a Friday night cancelled them all last minute..

So no choice, headed down to C328 to get a meal.. and look at some fishes...

At the western store, had to endorse my loyalty card from a previous takeaway, and the cashier seemed to unreluctant to do so. Even my meal today, which was just a few cents from the required $10 spent per chop, was excluded from the loyalty program.

Really wonder.. are we so inflexible at times when both the receipts added up could have qualified me for at least 2 more chops. Sigh... so much for being loyal to a brand?

Anyway.. at C328.. got myself another whiptail catfish!!

Foreign Sacrificial

Returned home today to be greeted by a sight of a Civil Defence Rescue vehicle and a police car...

Many people were gathered and watching from under a sheltered cover.

Apparently, some Bangladesh construction worker had falled to his death.

It's quite a sad thing even though they are just foreign workers. They are after all, like as humans, and some mother's son. I can imagine the grief their family would feel...

Let's just observe a minute of silence for our unsung heros.. without them, we won't have such beautiful infrastructure.

Chilli Padi Mary!

Now.. this is not a type error..

Chili Padi Mary is indeed a cocktail drink available at the St. Regis Singapore. Just in case you did not know the Bloody Mary is the signature drink at St. Regis and here in Singapore, the drink has been adapted and infused with local flavour with the addition of chili padi!

The skillful bartender serving his concoction at the Astor Bar..

Looking beautiful in a shot glass...
I really like the next pic... no photoshop... it looks so cool... like a sizzling effect!

So savour the Chili Padi at the Astor Bar, while appreciating fine arts of Picasso... Life's a luxury..

Anyway.. I got so inspired by a video featuring this song Delerium by Silence ft. Sarah McLachlan :

Cheers to uncompromising, bespoke, seductive and address!

First seen growing out of nowhere from a pot...

Then I gave it a pot on its own, and it grew so huge!!!

Anyone has any idea?

A ficus of sorts?
