LONDON - People working 10 or 11 hours a day are more likely to suffer serious
heart problems, including heart attacks, than those clocking off after seven
hours, researchers said on Tuesday.
The finding, from an 11-year study
of 6,000 British civil servants, does not provide definitive proof that long
hours cause coronary heart disease but it does show a clear link, which experts
said may be due to stress.
In all, there were 369 cases of death due to
heart disease, non-fatal heart attacks and angina among the London-based study
group -- and the risk of having an adverse event was 60 percent higher for those
who worked three to four hours overtime.
Working an extra one to two
hours beyond a normal seven-hour day was not associated with increased risk.
"It seems there might a threshold, so it is not so bad if you work
another hour or so more than usual," said Dr Marianna Virtanen, an
epidemiologist at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health and University
The higher incidence of heart problems among those
working overtime was independent of a range of other risk factors including
smoking, being overweight or having high cholesterol.
But Virtanen said
it was possible the lifestyle of people working long hours deteriorated over
time, for example as a result of poor diet or increased alcohol consumption.
More fundamentally, long hours may be associated with work-related
stress, which interferes with metabolic processes, as well as "sickness
presenteeism," whereby employees continue working when they are ill.
Virtanen and colleagues published their findings in the European Heart
Commenting on the study, Gordon McInnes, professor of clinical
pharmacology at the University of Glasgow's Western Infirmary, said the findings
could have widespread implications for doctors assessing patients' heart risks.
"If the effect is truly causal, the importance is much greater than
commonly recognized. Overtime-induced work stress might contribute to a
substantial proportion of cardiovascular disease," he said.
A perfect excuse for having shorter hours... perhaps even shorter work weeks?

Well it does not, check out more pics on my other blog, Fishy Passion!
Sounds like a fairy tale to you?
Well, the ambiance and setting of this restaurant is indeed charming...
Quality of food wise, as its name implies, it serves dishes that has a strong feeling of home in every bite.
Simple, not too salty dishes... Not much of a fan fare...
Take their signature tofu dish:
Pretty nice, but texture could be improved and probably to bring out the characteristic sweetness of the dish, they should add some deep fried dried sole fish slices which will add some oomph!
Verdict: Definitely a place to go to evade crowds!

What I like about the place is that we get to enjoy the steamboat in a pretty cool air con environment. They have this little shields to protect the flame from the air con:
Which I think is pretty good, cos it would be really difficult to enjoy steamboat when you are already sweating while eating!
Choice of food is also good, love their hand made meat balls which come in a variety like prawn ball, chicken ball, beef ball:
The next item, was not provided by them! We brought these crabs to enjoy! Really nice and sweet!
Never trust names, especially those of profit making establishments.
Went to this food establishment at Causeway Point that specialises in pasta, from its name, it was supposed to cause some form of mania whenever you eat at their place.
However, I left that place thinking otherwise!
Too bland a clam chowder soup, lacking in vicosity and mouthfeel. Not to mention a bland flavour profile.
Garlic bread was no better too!
But the worst was their pasta, which I tried the beef ball version.
Sauce was too watery, no taste. And the meat ball was so commercialised, like those you can buy off the shelves off supermarkets.

I must say that with the current work load that I am having in office now, such a trend will continue for months!
Anyway, treasuring the public holiday, Labour Day, as well as seizing the fact that I am not working on a public holiday.
Had dinner with my family at Ichiban, Causeway Point.
My favourite Japanese Curry topped with Cheese:
Dessert of green tea ice cream, with azuki red beans and rice dumplings...
Here we are at the Han's, which is 24 hrs, at Thomnson Springleaf area, after working till the wee hours in the morning...
Pretty surprised that it is still pretty packed!
Ordered a main linguine with sirloin beef steak:As well as a hot cuppa earl grey tea to sooth the tired soul as well as for that extra dose of caffeine!
To sweeten things up, a fresh cream strawberry cheesecake.... what a prefect way to end a tiring day!
